The French colony Haiti, some of France's money making and heavily taxed plantations had pressures set upon them to make more and more money. In order to create the most money possible the french used slaves for as much as they could, just showing how needed this country was for having so much labor. The plantation owners didn’t have enough man power in them to punish and control all of their slaves so they would use their slaves for those needs. They used slaves for punishing one another, farming, and used an educated Jamaican voodoo priest named Dutty Boukman as a slave driver. Texts about dutty Boukman before the revolutions say "He had been a commandeur (slave driver) and later a coachman on the Clément plantation,”this shows on how desperate they relied on their slaves and with how much terrible pain they put them through to keep them working(the Louverture project). Terrible conditions qoute, the main reason for the revolution was that treatment that was forced upon themselves to even give each other that punishment. Until they rose up and fought against the french rule, with many counterparts of the revolution starting with the Dutty rebellion. The Dutty Rebellion was seen as the start of the revolution, “if the revolution in Saint-Domingue was a roaring fire than Boukman’s rebellion was the spark.” it shows that the Haitian revolution (back in the day Haiti was known as Saint-Domingue before the revolution) was both big in history for being a roaring fire and that Boukman rebellion started it(The Louverture Project). After Boukman rebellion it was a pattern of rampages, freeing slaves, executions, and burning properties. The Haitian revolution finally ended in 1804 when Dessalines ordered the execution of the remaining french, but they only became a country in 1805 when Dessalines made the Haitian constitution making Haiti a slave free country with all former slaves the ability to own land and citizenship.
Other Revolution
Haiti in the late 17th century was a very high tensioned time, with one revolution already and tensions high of both another one at home and at France. Known as the ogé revolution, he tried to overthrow the government but failed but gave hope of a new one. The ogé revolution was the first attempt of ridding the french “Vincent Ogé, returned to Saint Domingue from France and led an armed uprising” an uprising which failed but a year later succeeded and called the Haitian revolution (A Different Route to Emancipation, J Popkin). Another source of inspiration would have been the french revolution back home, the french needed money and this just made things even more intense and pressured. At the time people used slaves and had no second thoughts but this event showed hope that slaves could be free people “There was also fear that slavery revolts would jump to neighboring islands that the British and Spanish owned.” this event started the abolishment movement and gave hope to all people that slavery could be put behind us and become unneeded(The French and Haitian Revolutions, KRAJKA32, Washington University; Green Bay).
